A notice clarifying FFN's content policy regarding MA rated fiction was posted to their front page on June 4, 2012. This caused much confusion on behalf of the user base as to what content should be classified M or MA and for what reason. Users speculate that this purge was caused by a policy change around the same time that would allow users under the age of 18 to register, as first mentioned in 2002.
As with the previous purge, several petitions were created in protest with no success. Another mass exodus was also made, now to Archive of Our Own (Ao3), which was still in its infancy having been launched in 2009 in response to the 2007 LiveJournal Strikethrough and Boldthrough.
Though the exact number of stories that were lost is unclear, it is estimated that anywhere between 8,000 and 62,000 stories were deleted, and thousands of accounts were suspended.

The first wave of FanFiction.Net purges began on September 12, 2002 and was caused by a policy change that banned fiction rated MA (equivalent to NC-17), as well as fiction written in second person, fiction including real people (RPS/RPF), and fiction written as a script, chat room or keyboard dialog.

This purge lead to a mass exodus of users to FanDomination.net, as well as the creation of AdultFanfiction.net. Several petitions were created in protest of the purges, the most noteworthy being "STOP the destruction of Fanfiction.net!" created by Charlotte Weatherly that gained over 44,000 signatures. Despite this, the policy change was not overturned.
It is speculated that adult content was purged from the site to prepare for a policy update that would allow users under the age of 18 to register, which was inacted in the second purge of 2012.
